CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS

•  Story Telling ( 10:00 – 11:00)

After pick up at your hotel we drive to ASSET Information Centre known as the Cultural Encounters where tourists would be welcome with a refreshing drink and a delicious locally made coos pancake. After a brief introduction of ASSET, the guest will be told stories on Gambian culture and history by renowned historians and Jallies in the Gambia . The one hour programme will consist of ½ hour story telling, 10 minutes soft kora break and the final 20 minutes reserved for questions and answers.

•  Sifo Village (12:00 – 12:35)

From the Cultural Encounters we take another 50 minutes drive to Sifo Villge which is 10kms east of Brikama. Form there, you will visit the Bees farm which has been in existence for 25 years. You can see traditional and modern hives and learn how honey is used to complement local food as well as play an important role in local medicine. At the Bees Farm, there will also be a visit to a Tree Planting Project sponsored by The Gambia Experience. 3,000 Gmelina aborrea and Cashew Nut trees have been planted within the farm in an effort to combat de-forestation, create a nursery for future plantings and create employment opportunities for the local community.

•  Gambia Is Good (13:00 – 14:30)

From Sifo village we take a 30 minutes drive to the GIG farmyard. Funded by the Travel Foundation, this project trains rural women and youths in advanced farming techniques with the view of establishing a link between local farmers and the tourism industry, supplying hotels with locally grown produce.

A local lunch using fresh ingredients will be served in the relaxed atmosphere of the training centre. Locally made solar cookers are introduced for some of the cooking, thus significantly reducing the use of wood or charcoal which are partly responsible for the depletion of our forests. Chilled soft drinks and beer are available for sale. After lunch, there will be time to see a local nursery, different methods of irrigation. There are modern toilet facilities and a fixed price farm and craft shop.

NB:Please note that the minimum for this excursion is 10 people and the maximum is 25 people. The itinerary can also be tailor made to suit the need of visitors.
