ASSET - THE GAMBIA : Supporting members to succeed

PAPER RECYCLING PROJECT

The paper Recycling Skills Project (Registered Charity No. 556/2001)

The paper recycling skills project is a newly established Gambian Registered Organisation. The aim behind the charity was to introduce the traditional skill of papermaking to the country in order to assist a number of students with their supply of paper and books for school. The first sheet of paper was made in August 2001 and by 2005, the small scale Mill, (based in a compound in fajikunda village, in Serekunda) was producing 50-100 sheets of A3 paper a day. The Gambian touch to this project normally used in preparing meals ways, from the traditional punders normally used in preparing meals being used to breakdown scavenged was papers into pulp, to the Gambian scrap cloths (thrown away by tailors) being used along with other recycled material to create beautiful covers for the P.R.S.P. handmade books of all shaped and sizes.

Having been awarded a grant expand the project, P.R.S.P. are now ambitiously working to develop a site in the village that should bring like minded environmentally conscious crafts people together, in what has been nicknamed ‘the Craft Village’. Overlooking a bolon, this 11 room structure originally built to house animals, has a courtyard the Mill has been longing for, ready to hang wet papers that the staff form daily. The team welcome visitiors, whether you’ve come to watch, from a sheet , buy, a book or offer advice on the project.
