SANYANG WOMEN VEGETABLE GARDEN SONYOMA ASSOCIATION
Sanyang Women Vegetable Growers in collaboration with the Gam-Holland Foundation is a combination of three women Kafo, growing produce for sale to small and large local businesses in the Gambia. Vegetables available but not limited to are; tomato, cabbage, hot pepper, bitter tomato, egg plant, cucumber, sweet pepper, okra and lettuce. Future plans are to expand the garden and incorporate a fruit tree nursery. This four-hectare garden is also home to the Gam-Holland Foundation Development and Literacy program and the Skills and Training center.
It is here that the Sanyang women attend Mandinka and English language classes, agriculture development classes and skills training classes. Education among the women is highly emphasized and is the foundation for agricultural development. Students are taught new and sustainable gardening techniques to improve local crop production by working on their own trial projects. The skills training classes currently focuses on income generating projects such as solar fruit drying, sewing and soap making.
The garden is located 1km south of Sanyang village and is on the western side of the coastal road. Sanyang is located between Tujereng and Gunjur.
