SOLAR PROJECT TILOO

Solar cooking demonstration with school children

WELCOME TO SOLAR PROJECT TILOO

"Cook with the power of the sun – save money & firewood“

The solar project Tiloo is situated at Kanifing in the Combo Area and has a carpentry workshop, bakery and restaurant.

The goals of the project are:

•  Leading an information centre promoting and increasing the understanding of the solar energy

•  Increase awareness of environment issues such as protection of the climate

•  Distribution of solar cookers, solar food and other solar products

•  Increasing of health

•  Lead local people to self-help, especially the women

Each one of the solar cookers we use saves 1.64 Tonnes wood per year. The production and distribution of the solar cookers and tunnel dryers are run by the project centre. Daily produced specialities from the bakery are served in the restaurant as well as in the streets. Solar cookers are also promoted and sold through cooking demonstrations in cities and villages all over the country, and educational programmes in schools.

This year (2009) we started with sponsoring 10 schools, train five students from each school for five days on how to cook healthy snacks. A percentage of the income made from these snacks sold to students will be put aside for a year with the view to sponsor another school with a solar cooker. With this practice, we believe we can in few years reach more schools and sensitise more young people on the environmental and economic benefits cooking with the power of the sun has compared to the traditional way of cooking with wood or gas.
